This Privacy Policy explains how UNISON City of Stoke on Trent Local Government Branch ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use the Unison mobile application (the "App") and related services. We are the data controller for the purposes of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
1. Information We Collect
- Account information — name, email address, and the branch or group you belong to, used to identify you and deliver relevant content.
- Location data — with your consent, the App accesses your device's location (including in the background, where you permit it) to detect when you enter or leave defined geofenced areas. This is used solely to send you location-relevant notifications. You can disable location access at any time in your device settings.
- Device and push notification data — a device push token (via Firebase Cloud Messaging), device type, and operating system, used to deliver push notifications.
- Poll responses — the answers you submit to polls within the App.
- Usage information — basic technical logs needed to operate the service and diagnose problems.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To deliver notifications, content, and polls relevant to you and your location.
- To operate, maintain, secure, and improve the App.
- To respond to your enquiries and provide support.
- To comply with our legal obligations.
3. Legal Basis for Processing
We process your data on the basis of your consent (in particular for location access and push notifications), the performance of a contract with you, our legitimate interests in operating the service, and where necessary to meet a legal obligation.
4. Sharing Your Information
We do not sell your personal data. We share data only with service providers who help us operate the App, including:
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging, for push notification delivery.
- eUKhost, our website hosting and infrastructure provider.
We may also disclose data where required by law.
5. Data Retention
We keep your personal data only as long as necessary for the purposes set out above, or as required by law. Account data is retained for up to 5 years after your account is closed, after which it is deleted.
6. Your Rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict the processing of your personal data, to object to processing, and to data portability. To exercise these rights, contact us using the details below. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
7. Account & Data Deletion
You can request deletion of your account and associated personal data at any time by contacting us at ul-stokecity@unison.org.uk. We will action your request in accordance with applicable law.
8. Data Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data, including encrypted transport (HTTPS) and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed at children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be notified within the App or by other appropriate means, and the "Last updated" date above will be revised.
